the original unity in which all things are potential but not individual or differentiated is a state of unconsciousness.  -  this is represented by a singe circle.  when differentiation begins, consciousness begins.  when the child comes out of the mother, he is a seperate individual and begins to become consciousness.  when the original unit is severed into two we have confrontation.  it is when you see that which is different from you that you will become aware of that which you really are.  

 

it is confrontation with "the other" that brings and develops consciousness.
